The gear ratio refers to the ratio of the front and rear sprockets. For example, a stock Suzuki GSXR600 has a 16-tooth front sprocket and a 45-tooth rear sprocket, resulting in a ratio of 45\/16 or 2.81. Installing a larger front sprocket or a smaller rear sprocket decreases the ratio (sometimes called “taller gearing”), which produces more speed at a given engine RPM.
